Labelling Rules

Labelling Rules

Terms of use

The Bio-Siegel may be used on packaging and on advertising and sales promotion materials only if it meets the requirements provided for the label’s graphic design by the Eco Label Ordinance.

The German Eco Label Act and the German Eco-Labelling Ordinance are the legal basis for the use of the Bio-Siegel.

As to the criteria for use of the Bio-Siegel, the Eco Label Act refers to the requirements provided by the EU Regulation on organic production and labelling of organic products. Products labelled with the Bio-Siegel must have been produced and controlled in accordance with these provisions. In addtion to these requirements, the German Eco Label Act also provides penal and administrative fines in case the Bio-Siegel is misused.

The Bio-Siegel may be used on non-processed agricultural products and on processed products intended for human consumption or as feedstuffs and which fall under the scope of EU regulations on organic farming. The German Eco Label Ordinance provides that, prior to its first use, products to be labelled with the Bio-Siegel must be notified to the Bio-Siegel Information Service.

Basic rules and designs

The remark "nach EG-Öko-Verordnung" may also appear in other languages of EU member states.

Regional or other indications of origin may be added directly next to the Bio-Siegel. Additional labels which state that a product was organically farmed are also allowed.

Size and alignment

The Bio-Siegel shall be an integral part of the general package design and should be clearly visible. Its minimum width is ten milimetres - ranging from the outer left to the outer right corner of the green margin. While maximum width is 33 mm it should be noted that the size of the word "Bio" in Bio-Siegel must not exceed 60 percent of the font size used to designate the labelled product. This rule does not apply when the Bio-Siegel is used in its minimum size. The Bio-Siegel may be tilted to a maximum of 15 degrees. Please note: the white contour is an integral part of the Bio-Siegel!

Colours

1 Bio-Siegel print reproduction in four-colour printing

The Bio-Siegel must always be rendered in four-color print. Both its background and its contour are white with the contour and the green frame being of equal width. The white contour  is an integral part of the Bio-Siegel! Artwork four-colour print

In case four-colour printing is impossible for technical, economic or other reasons , the Bio-Siegel’s original colours may be generated by special Pantone or HKS colour systems.

3 Monochrome Bio-Siegel print reproduction

4 Print reproduction without the white background and the white contour

Even if the white background and the white contour are impossible to realise, you may use the Bio-Siegel on the respective packaging background.

5 Print reproduction without the remark "nach EG-Öko-Verordnung"

Depending on printing procedures (Flexodruck, for instance), legibility might be affected where small label sizes are used. In such cases, do increase the font size of "nach EG-Öko-Verordnung". If legibility does not improve, "nach EG-Öko-Verordnung" may be omitted. In this case, positions and spatial relations of the remaining words and graphic elements must be maintained. "Bio" shall thus not be moved to the centre of the logo.

Please note:

Beyond the modifications mentioned above, no changes regarding fonts, colors and shapes are allowed.
